In the dynamic realm of education, innovation is the driving force that moves us forward. Bantani Education is honoured to be part of a new publication that aims to bring innovative education to every situation. Scaffold – a deck of cards to design competence-oriented learning experience has recently been published by the Joint Research Centre (JRC), the European Commission’s science and knowledge service. It was produced in collaboration with the European Training Foundation (ETF), with additional contributions from external experts and institutions.  The report is designed to empower educators to craft learning experiences that foster key competences among young and adult learners. The report is available to download from the Publications Office of the European Union.

Unlocking the potential of Scaffold

Scaffold is a deck of 102 cards, created to assist educators in designing, developing and implementing learning activities. Scaffold makes European competence frameworks more accessible and practically useful for teachers and educators across various fields. It is based on European competence frameworks for digital (DigComp), entrepreneurship (EntreComp), sustainability (GreenComp), and personal, social and learning-to-learn competences (LifeComp). The cards offer a comprehensive approach to merge these competences in both formal and non-formal learning environments, showing how multiple learning outcomes can be integrated in the design of curricula, teaching methods, assessment strategies.

Scaffold emerged through the collaborative efforts of the European Training Foundation, as part of the Creating New Learning initiative, and the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre, in conjunction with the Directorate-General for Employment, Social Affairs, and Inclusion.

Guiding the Way with Scaffold

The Scaffold cards stand as an intuitive, self-contained tool, complemented by a booklet that serves as a guide for new users. Whether designing a single lesson or an entire course, educators can seamlessly integrate the competences outlined in the European frameworks into their curricula, teaching methods, and assessment strategies.

The accompanying guide delves deeper into the fundamental principles of learning design, focusing on the development of learning outcomes for key European competences. This resource is tailored for education and training practitioners, providing insights into teaching and learning methods that support cross-disciplinary, cross-curricular, and integrated learning.

Bantani Education’s contribution

At Bantani Education, we take immense pride in the accomplishments of our team. Hazel Israel, Education and Skills Advisor, played a pivotal role in the creation of the Scaffold guide. Alongside Hazel, co-authors Margherita Bacigalupo, Olena Bekh, Andrea Binasco, and Lilian Weikert García have contributed their expertise to the initiative.

Hazel Israel and ETF colleague Olena Bekh also presented the Scaffold cards during Being Entrepreneurial 2023 Conference. The successful workshop session at the conference allowed participants to actively engage in integrating digital, entrepreneurial, and sustainability competences into their curricula using Scaffold’s competence-based framework.

‘Scaffold is a fresh and versatile approach to designing learning embedding key competences and 21st century teaching and assessment methods. Using the cards is fun and can support more ambitious, creative and innovative learning designs when used by individual educators and in teams. We spend so much time on screen these days that it is engaging and enjoyable to use analogue tools’

Driving Change with DARYA Project

But that’s not all – we are also excited about our involvement in the DARYA initiative by the ETF which incorporates Scaffold as an integral part of the training process. Through the Dialogue and Action for Resourceful Youth in Central Asia (DARYA) project, we aim to bring training to Central Asia using Scaffold. This groundbreaking initiative, supported by the European Union, focuses on skill development for youth in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan. Bantani Education (Belgium) leads the project with support from Fondazione Brodolini (Italy) and Greatvisory (Poland) who each bring their expertise, skills and experience to the project. For more details on this exciting new project, read the DARYA-Scaffold Launch article on our website

As we stride forward into the future of education, Bantani Education remains committed to pioneering innovations that empower educators and learners alike. With Scaffold, we open doors to competence-oriented learning experiences that transcend boundaries and shape the next generation of skilled and empowered individuals.
